Future Planning
Letter of intent Special Needs Trust (SNT) Guardianship All parents need to consider how their children's future needs will be met, but parents of children with disabilities often must plan for different and more extensive needs than parents of non-disabled children. Over the past several years, NYLPI and the NYS Commission on the Quality of Care for the Mentally Disabled have devoted considerable effort to train parents of children with developmental disabilities to provide for their children's future. In addition, while many parents are able to step out of the picture once their children reach adulthood or graduate from school and start working, many parents of adults with disabilities must continue to be actively involved in helping their child arrange for necessities such as income, housing, health care and educational or training opportunities. Advance planning helps children be more independent. Advance planning also gives parents peace of mind, knowing that children's needs have been met, even if something should happen to the parent. Wills, trusts, and guardianships are the mainstay of future planning.
