Voting

NYLPI has promoted access to polling places for many years, both in the City and across the state, through litigation and coordinated on-site inspection for compliance with accessibility laws. We have also conducted seminars and produced written materials to inform the public and election workers and officials of the voting rights of people with disabilities. NYLPI also acts as a voter registration site under the National Voter Registration Act. Since the presidential election in 2000, we have been working both in coalitions and alone to ensure proper compliance with a variety of new federal mandates. These have included the replacement of lever and punch card voting systems with modern, accessible technologies, creating statewide voter registration data bases, and ensuring that polling sites are accessible and that New Yorkers with a variety of disabilities can vote independently and confidentially.
