People with disabilities often face tremendous obstacles accessing health care services. For some, physical obstacles make access to health care providers difficult, or even impossible. For others, a failure to provide sign language interpretation may make communication impossible, and access all but meaningless. Still others experience outright denial of services because of their disabilities.
NYLPI advocates on behalf of people with disabilities in the health care system. Our docket includes a case challenging a private doctor's refusal to provide services to a man with mental retardation, cases challenging hospitals' refusal to provide sign interpreters to patients who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, and a case challenging a hospital's practice of segregating patients with developmental disabilities in a separate waiting area. NYLPI also conducts a statewide campaign to ensure health care access on behalf of people with disabilities facing physical barriers to access to care.
