Attorney General Schneiderman announces his support for NY Renews progressive reinvestment-focused carbon pricing policy

Yesterday at an event sponsored by NY Renews, a coalition of environmental, economic, and social justice organizations and labor, NYLPI Equal Justice Works Fellow Shiva Prakash presented a new and groundbreaking carbon polluter fee and reinvestment policy for New York State alongside coalition partners from Demos, New York Communities for Change, and ALIGN. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman spoke at the event and for the first time announced his public support of a carbon fee and reinvestment approach, describing the NY Renews coalition as an effective force and movement for change in the right direction: “It’s a workable, beautiful, feasible solution that people can understand.”

In the face of inaction and obstruction on the federal level, the Climate and Community Investment Act (CCIA) will provide New York with the mechanism to be a leader on climate, make polluters pay for the full social cost of climate change and public health hazards, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and reinvest in our communities, local economies, and good clean energy jobs.
