Litigation

Protecting disadvantaged New Yorkers through affirmative and defensive litigation is a primary objective of NYLPI's work. Member firms have undertaken groundbreaking litigation in areas such as housing, civil rights and civil liberties, disability rights, employment, and environmental discrimination. Recent examples include:

  • Abounding Grace Ministries, O’Melveny & Myers LLP
    Abounding Grace Ministries is a faith-based organization that provides a variety of community and social services. The firm is representing them in a contract-related litigation.


  • Assistive Technology Law Center, Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP
    The firm is helping a group of Medicare recipients who use wheelchairs to challenge a policy that would limit Medicare coverage for equipment that is necessary for their mobility.


  • New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP
    The firm is co-counseling with NYLPI on a case involving a hospital that did not provide adequate sign language interpretation services to a person with a hearing disability.


  • Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, Bingham McCutchen LLP
    The firm is co-counseling with TLDEF on a litigation involving a local bar that allegedly discriminates against transgender individuals by preventing them from entering the establishment.


  • Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, Latham & Watkins LLP
    PRLDEF is defending the rights of Latino day-laborers who are being evicted from their homes in the Town of Brookhaven. The firm is co-counseling with the organization in an action they have filed against the municipality and the county.


  • Special Education Matter, Davis Polk & Wardwell
    The firm is assisting a child with special education needs with obtaining reimbursement from the Department of Education for his tuition at an educational institution where he was receiving services.
