Social Justice Summer Internships![]() 2008 Summer Intern Class Our summer internship program does more than help us meet our need for legal research and writing of exceptional quality. We see it as an intellectual and political opportunity for the office, as a chance to step away from the demands of our practice to think and talk about our goals, assumptions, and methods. The program also helps us to fulfill an important responsibility to the broader progressive legal sector and the communities with which it works: the responsibility to train young civil rights advocates to be both precise and bold. Finally, the summer internship program works as a pipeline in our recruitment efforts, particularly the recruitment of Equal Justice Works and Skadden Fellowship sponsorees. We’re privileged to have past and current Fellows on staff to help with the process, and we are also extremely supportive of interns who apply for post-graduate fellowships with other organizations. In 2009, in addition to carrying out a range of writing assignments, NYLPI interns ran seminars devoted to our areas of work; attended meetings with elected officials, community members, and other advocates; sat in on court proceedings and negotiations; carried out a physical survey of the accessibility of several subway lines; drafted flyers and know-your-rights handouts; staffed a housing discrimination intake line; and took a tour of an environmental justice community in Staten Island. NYLPI only accepts applications from 2Ls and our deadline is generally in mid-October. Please click here for more information.
