Media Advisory: Southwest Brooklyn Community Organizations File Formal Request With State Department of Health Urging Approval of Proposal to Maintain Health Services at Victory Memorial Hospital
On Wednesday, October 17, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) will file a formal request with the State Department of Health on behalf of the Concerned Residents of Southwest Brooklyn, a community coalition formed to ensure that crucial health services remain available to residents of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst. Victory Memorial Hospital has been a critical part of Southwest Brooklyn’s health care safety net for generations, but it is being forced to close by New York State. Recently, SUNY Downstate Medical Center submitted a proposal to the Department of Health, offering to take over some crucial health services previously provided by Victory Memorial. In their request, NYLPI and Concerned Residents of Southwest Brooklyn urge the Department of Health to approve SUNY Downstate’s proposal, and provide compelling testimony from community residents about the devastating impact of closing Victory Memorial Hospital without making alternative sources of health care available to the community. The filing of the formal request will be announced at a rally at Victory Memorial Hospital. Copies of the request and accompanying materials will be presented by the community to local elected officials who will be at the rally.
