ABA Journal: Lawyers’ Groups Ease Path to Citizenship with Interest-Free Loans

The ABA Journal recently covered the Citizenship Loan Program and its success in helping immigrants overcome some of the financial barriers to citizenship presented by application fees. NYLPI Pro Bono Clearinghouse Program Associate Maribel Maria spoke with the ABA Journal about NYLPI’s partnership with the Hebrew Free Loan Society and Catholic Migration Services to offer interest-free loans to potential recipients.  

“The goal of the program is ultimately to put the citizenship process in reach for lower-income New Yorkers without regard to their ability to afford the application fees,” Maria said, noting the loan program was created in response to the Trump administration’s proposed changes greatly increasing the federal government’s fees for citizenship applications.
