Climate and Energy Justice
Climate and Energy Justice, Environmental Justice
The impacts of climate change fall hardest on communities that contribute least to the problem, including in New York City. NYLPI provides legal assistance to community groups like WE ACT for Environmental Justice and The Point CDC to develop community owned shared solar energy projects. Community-owned shared renewables help alleviate community members’ high electric bills, bring jobs and economic development to the community, and help reduce climate impacts like urban heat island effects and flooding from rising sea levels and frequent storms. NYLPI also advocates for equitable energy and climate policy at the state and local level, including as a core member of the NY Renews coalition.
