Fair Housing

Community Justice, Disability Justice, Fair Housing, Immigrant Justice

Rapid gentrification in New York City has created an affordable housing crisis, with the development boom matched by increased tenant harassment, discrimination, and displacement. People with disabilities and immigrants are at particular risk, and because of isolation, language, and physical barriers, they often are not able defend their rights. NYLPI fights for fair housing through aggressive enforcement of federal and state fair housing and anti-discrimination laws. We work to compel landlords to provide accessible housing and reasonable accommodations — such as wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and transfers — to people who have disabilities or medical issues. We also represent clients denied apartments and lease renewals because of their disabilities, immigration status, or source of income.
