Physical education improves public health, reduces obesity, and improves focus and educational attainment. Rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses related to lack of physical exercise are highest in low-income communities and communities of color. Despite the proven benefits of physical education affecting health, education, and opportunity, New York City consistently fails its students. State standards require daily gym class from kindergarten through third grade, and older students are required to have physical education at least three days a week. But many NYC public schools do not meet the minimum standards. NYLPI worked with the City Council to pass a reporting bill requiring the DOE to regularly collect and report data on physical education compliance in schools. NYLPI works in coalition to monitor compliance and enforce these standards.
