New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a community-driven civil rights organization, seeks a Community Organizer in its Health Justice program.

The Community Organizer will be an integral part of the Health Justice team, working alongside attorneys and advocates to develop and implement campaigns and cases. The Health Justice (HJ) program brings a racial justice and immigrant rights focus to healthcare advocacy in New York City and State. In partnership with individuals and community-based organizations, we use a wide range of advocacy tools – including community organizing, coalition-building, individual representation, impact litigation, and legislative advocacy – to advance four broad goals: (1) combat the human rights crisis in immigration detention; (2) promote immigrant access to healthcare; (3) eliminate racial and ethnic discrimination and systemic and institutional barriers that limit New Yorkers access to healthcare; and (4) address the social determinants of health so that all New Yorkers can live a healthy life. Current campaigns focus on advancing the rights of people confined to immigration detention, including the right to access necessary care, and advocating for their release; providing immigration representation and health advocacy for undocumented and uninsured immigrants with serious health conditions; providing immigration representation and health advocacy for undocumented immigrants who identify as transgender, gender-nonconforming, or intersex; improving access to medical care for people with disabilities; and addressing social determinants of health, including outreach and education on health-related matters.

The Organizer will lead NYLPI’s role in community-based advocacy strategies to improve access to healthcare in immigration detention and to advocate for an end to harmful detention policies. The Organizer will also support NYLPI’s Medical Providers Network, connecting volunteer medical providers to people in detention to provide medical advocacy for individuals seeking better care while detained, requesting release, and pursuing underlying immigration cases. Additionally, the Organizer will work on campaigns to expand health coverage for immigrant New Yorkers, and to promote community engagement and strategy to remove police from encounters with people experiencing mental health crises. The Organizer will also have the opportunity to develop new campaigns to expand access to healthcare and to address the social determinants of health, as well as to support policy advocacy and in-person and virtual actions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Demonstrated commitment to health justice, racial justice, and/or immigrant rights.
  • Strong writing, organizational, analytic, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently and to juggle multiple tasks under time constraints.
  • Excellent strategic judgment and the drive to originate and effectuate challenging campaigns.
  • Experience working with community-based organizations and individual clients.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work and communicate with a diverse audience: staff, organizational partners, and community members.

Preferred:

  • At least two years of relevant organizing experience.
  • Fluency in a language other than English, preferably Spanish.
  • Experience with legislative/policy advocacy and lobbying.

NYLPI offers a competitive salary based on years of relevant experience. A person in this role with two to four years of experience would earn $58,000 to $62,000 and NYLPI offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including health insurance, short- and long-term disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan, and fifteen (15) days of vacation during the first year of employment.  This position requires some on-site, in-person work.
