New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a community-driven civil rights organization, seeks a talented Manager for Foundation and Government Grants to join its team. 

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Manager for Foundation and Government Grants will play a critical role in sustaining and growing two significant fundraising portfolios to support NYLPI’s program operations, deepen relationships with current foundation funders, and further the organization’s growth goals by identifying new potential prospects. The Manager for Foundation and Government Grants will be responsible for year-round management of NYLPI’s grant calendar as well as writing grant proposals and reports, producing responses to government RFPs (Request for Proposals), and researching foundations and other potential funding opportunities to raise over $2.6M annually. Working closely with program staff across the organization, the Manager for Foundation and Government Grants plays an essential role in NYLPI’s fundraising and program growth.


Serving as a key member of the Development team, the Manager for Foundation and Government Grants is responsible for NYLPI’s portfolio of institutional fundraising of more than $2.6M, including the following: 

    • Grant Writing and Research
      • Writing and Submission – lead on writing for all grant proposals and reports in collaboration with program and campaign leads. 
      • Pipeline Development – Conduct prospect research to increase NYLPI’s pipeline. Research and collect trends in institutional giving relevant to NYLPI.
      • Internal Capacity Building – Develop meeting and funder briefs for new and existing funders. Identify systems improvements to aid institutional giving efforts.  
      • Storytelling and Narrative Building – Work with Program staff to identify client and partner stories with an ethical storytelling lens for funding proposals and external communications.
  • Grant Management
      • Manage process for timely submissions of all NYLPI grant reports to foundation and government funders. Develop and implement effective systems and processes to streamline grant management activities. 
      • Monitor all grant award expectations, deliverables, and necessary updates to the funder. 
      • Build and maintain relationships with funders and key staff members. Establish and maintain database with current information, contacts, and crediting preferences for all funders. 
      • Manage calendar of regular stewardship and communication with internal and external partners for a portfolio of grants and contracts to strengthen existing relationships and initiate new connections. 
  • Grant Administration
    • Manage year-round grants calendar to ensure timely submission of all proposals, LOIs, and reports. Work closely with program staff to ensure report accuracy and timeliness.   
    • Maintain accurate and timely records on funders in donor database and on NYLPI’s internal shared drive.
    • Monitor grant compliance and ensure all funding requirements are met, including programmatic reporting, and acknowledgements and recognition. 




  • Successful track record of foundation and/or government fundraising.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills. 
  • Organized self-starter, pro-active team player, able to prioritize tasks and projects, work effectively and independently to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to build relationships with and craft messages for diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong technology skills, including using Microsoft 365 products
  • Commitment to social justice and civil rights.
  • Ability to work well with team members across axes of diversity and difference.   
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.


  • Five years of fundraising and grant writing experience. 
  • Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar donor database software.
  • Knowledge of the New York City philanthropic community.


This is a full-time position with a salary range of $72,000-77,000, depending on experience. A person in this role with 5 years of experience would earn $72,000.  NYLPI offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including health insurance, short- and long-term disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan (after 12 months, NYLPI contributes 5% of an employee’s annual salary and will match up to an additional 2½%), paid family and sick leave, fifteen (15) days of vacation during the first year of employment (increasing to 24 in the third year) and five personal days, eleven (11) official office holidays, and a holiday swapping policy to allow for the observation of holidays of your choice, as well as extensive voluntary benefits.   

This position is expected to be available for work from our New York City office, and for in-person work as duties require. NYLPI currently expects a minimum of two days in the office. Please note that NYLPI requires that all employees demonstrate proof of vaccination against COVID-19 and a current booster dose.
