NYLPI joined Make the Road New York and New York Immigration Coalition for a rally at City Hall to launch the new Transplant Equity report.

The rally and quotes from NYLPI’s Justin Wood, Director of Policy, and Karina Albistegui Adler (pictured), Senior Advocate for Health Justice, were featured in Crain’s NY Health Pulse health news recap:

Justin Wood, director of policy at New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, a nonprofit civil rights law firm, added that passing Coverage for All is an opportunity for New York to save money by including noncitizen New Yorkers in its application for a federal 1332 waiver, which Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration sought in February. These waivers are designed to help states offer residents affordable insurance.

While most undocumented New Yorkers remain uninsured, Karina Albistegui Adler, a senior advocate in the health justice program at New York Lawyers, said community organizations use a “patchwork of advocacy and legal maneuvering to get a very small number of people off dialysis and onto insurance.”
