On November 4, 2015 NYLPI and members of the Phys Ed 4 All coalition secured a victory in the passage of Local Law 102. This law mandates the Department of Education (DOE) to track and report how NYC schools are implementing physical education programs. The DOE’s first set of physical education reporting data was released on 8/31/2016, and brought to light existing gaps in access to physical education throughout all NYC Burroughs. The data also show disparities between communities and Burroughs, confirming access to physical education in NYC schools as a concern for equity. After achieving these PE advocacy milestones and receiving this data, NYLPI and members of the Phys Ed 4 All Coalition will work to ensure NYC Council’s budget allocations for PE are directed toward students most underserved.
