The National Day of Action, led by Defund Hate and Detention Watch Network, was held at Foley Square in New York City on September 12 and coincided with rallies across the country. As part of the Dignity Not Detention coalition, NYLPI joined advocates and peers, alongside Families for Freedom and Queer Detainee Empowerment Project, BAJI, Freedom to Thrive, Envision Freedom and Abolish ICE NY & NJ, to share about efforts to close detention centers.

Arielle Wisbaum, Immigration Staff Attorney, and Noelle Peñas, Health Justice Community Organizer, represented NYLPI and spoke at the event at Foley Square.

“Without appropriate medical care, the lives and safety of people detained are at risk, and medical neglect and abuse makes it even more difficult for them to fight their immigration cases. But the reality is that as long as our immigration detention system profits by detaining immigrants, these facilities will never be humane. Jails in New York routinely deny vital medical treatment to people in detention who have serious health conditions, delay specialist care and surgery, ignore complaints, fail to treat chronic conditions, fail to keep medical records up to standards, and refuse basic health-related items. Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right – instead of jailing and criminalizing immigrants, community safety must start with investing in resources and care for our communities.” – Noelle Peñas, Health Justice Community Organizer, NYLPI
