Press Conference: Next Steps for a Cleaner Jamaica
September 21 at 1:00 pm
New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, the Super Law Group, Riverkeeper, NY/NJ Baykeeper and Jamaica residents are holding a press conference to announce the next stage of the decades-long fight to stop pollution from waste transfer facilities in Jamaica Bay. This new strategy comes 61 days after American Recycling Management LLC and Regal Recycling Co., Inc were sent Notices of Intent to Sue for violating the Clean Water Act (CWA).
Waste transfer companies have long operated with impunity in Jamaica, discharging polluted water into Jamaica Bay and creating dangerous and unpleasant environmental hazards in the surrounding community. The residents of Jamaica, who are primarily Black, are subjected to putrid odors, loud noises from truck traffic, repulsive leachate puddles on the sidewalk and streets, and excessive dust from the processing of construction and demolition materials, which has led to the area being designated as an Environmental Justice community. Despite all this, the facilities have asked City Council to exempt them from the landmark Waste Equity Law of 2018 so they can pollute the community even more, in a bill that advocates successfully stalled earlier this summer.
