PSAL: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is! Virtual Press Conference
June 28 at 1:00 pm
Council Member Mark Treyger and New York City public school students and advocates from The Fair Play Coalition, including New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), are holding a virtual press conference to call attention to the pressing issue of advancing racial equity in after-school sports as New York City finalizes its budget for the coming year. While the New York City Department of Education (DOE) funding has proposed funding to equitably expand access to sports, advocates are pushing to ensure that the funding remains part of the final budget and that PSAL follows through on its commitments towards expanding access equitably.
Sports help improve students’ mental and physical health, and provide access to college opportunities for many students, yet Black and Latino students are twice as likely as students of other races to attend schools without any sports teams. In May 2019, the City Council passed legislation requiring the DOE to provide more transparent information on students’ access to high school sports teams – the data, released in January 2020, shows that Black and Latino students continue to have access to fewer sports teams than students of other races.
The DOE has been talking about equity for a long time without making any significant process toward achieving it. This is a critical opportunity to make good on promises to make access to school sports equitable for all NYC public school students.
