Wake up and Smell the Fumes - Support Clean Air

Every day, 150,000 students in New York City breathe in more than just knowledge — they’re inhaling the fumes of approximately 9,500 buses, idling away their futures. The health of our children and communities shouldn’t be left in a cloud of exhaust.

At New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), we’re driving change, literally. Our recent endeavors, including comprehensive monitoring at 40 schools across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, have shed light on a pressing issue: illegal idling by school buses is suffocating our communities — physically and metaphorically.

Our groundbreaking report, “Wake Up and Smell the Fumes,” reveals a startling truth: 20-25% of school buses break local idling laws, unnecessarily polluting the very air our children breathe. What’s more, this impacts not just to the health and well-being of students, but also school bus employees and to environmental justice communities where large school bus depots are concentrated.

Available in both English and Spanish, this report is a wake-up call for immediate action to transition to zero-emission technologies and enact sensible solutions to curb illegal idling. The policy recommendations we’ve put forth aren’t just words on paper; they’re blueprints for a cleaner, healthier New York, where children and residents can thrive in an environment free from the toxic grip of air pollution.

Your support is the engine behind our research and advocacy. With your help, we’re defending the fundamental right to clean air for every New Yorker, in every neighborhood.

This mission requires a collective effort, and there are many ways you can contribute to a pollution-free future:

  • Monetary donations fuel our day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Non-cash assets, such as stocks, donor-advised funds, or Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), provide substantial support for long-term advocacy and impactful change.

By joining our coalition of dedicated researchers, organizers, policymakers, and community members, you’re not just making a donation; you’re investing in the health and vitality of New York City.

Together, we can clear the path for a brighter, healthier New York. Donate today.
