Give the Gift of Justice This Holiday Season

Health Justice, News, Transforming Mental Health Crisis Response

Since 2015, police in New York City have killed at least 18 people experiencing mental health crises — 15 of whom were people of color. The killings are a microcosm of police violence around the world.

Mental illness is not a crime, but its criminalization has fueled the over-representation of people of color in prisons and fatal police shootings. NYLPI fights for a systemic reimagining of NYC’s response to mental health crises, replacing police in these situations with a team of trained peer crisis counselors and medical professionals to ensure that people in crisis are met with connections to care, instead of trauma and violence.

The holidays present many challenges on their own for those struggling with mental illness. Those challenges are compounded by the stressful impacts of COVID-19. NYLPI envisions healthcare, safety, and justice for folks living through these challenges — not policing, stripped rights, and incarceration.

To honor NYLPI’s commitment to this vision, every dollar donated through Giving Tuesday will be matched by a generous grant from FJC: A Foundation of Philanthropic Funds.

We have already reached 40% of our goal — that is $20,000 and counting towards transforming New York City’s Mental Health Crisis response.

Double your impact and give the gift of justice this holiday season. Donate now.
