Gothamist: CITY’S B-HEARD “NON-POLICE” PROGRAM STILL ONLY ANSWERS A QUARTER OF MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS CALLS IN ITS ALREADY VERY LIMITED PROGRAMFebruary 1, 2024
Gothamist reports that only a quarter of mental health crisis calls are routed to B-HEARD, leaving a critical gap in mental health crisis response coverage by alternatives to police, whom advocates have fiercely denounced as the wrong responders and who have killed 19 individuals experiencing mental health crises in the last few years in New York City alone.
Ruth Lowenkron, director of Disability Justice at NYLPI, which is a member of Correct Crisis Intervention Today – NYC, was interviewed about the critical shortfalls of this pilot program.
“What we are looking for is really the removal of the police in all but the rarest of circumstances” – Ruth Lowenkron, NYLPI
