NYLPI joined leading LGBTQI+ and women’s advocacy groups in calling upon Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Kathy Hochul to stop transfers of women and transgender detainees from Rikers Island to upstate prisons.

The letter says:

“The transfers are a reckless response to a crisis that has been most acute in the men’s jails. Shipping women and trans people to state prison will further separate them from families and children, community support, legal defense teams, and social workers.”

Politico reports:

“With staff shortages, overcrowded intake areas were left dirty with human waste, detainees did not receive food, water and medical care in a timely fashion, and inmates ran the show in part of the jail.”
