NYLPI’s Senior Staff Attorney for Disability Justice Marinda van Dalen wrote a letter to the editor featured in NY Daily News addressing the NYPD’s unwillingness to release body cam footage from two recent fatal police shootings.

“NYLPI has filed multiple successful lawsuits against the NYPD for access to body-worn camera footage of police shootings of people in crisis. Time and again, the NYPD has unlawfully refused to release the footage. In each case, court-ordered release of footage has shown that police officers failed to de-escalate the situation and, in fact, made it much worse. Their mistakes needlessly cost the lives of Miguel Richards, Susan Muller, Kawaski Trawick and many others.”
