11:00am, Tuesday, March 29, 2022, New York State Capitol: Advocacy Groups Oppose Expansions of Kendra’s Law, Propose Voluntary Strategies to Aid People in Mental Health Crises

WHAT: A group of mental health, disability, and criminal justice reform advocates will gather in Albany on Tuesday, March 29 to urge state legislators to reject the Governor’s misplaced, unjust and unconstitutional proposals to expand the use of Kendra’s Law – ahead of the final budget vote on March 31.

The event will replace fear with facts, countering the view that people with mental illnesses are a threat to the general public who require a “crackdown” and a return to past policies of institutionalization and discrimination.

Advocates will describe how a broken system, service inadequacy and ineffectiveness, and failure to engage Black and Brown people are key factors behind the mental health crisis that we face today, and how the answers lie in fixing, not forcing people into, the services that have failed them in the past.

Speakers will highlight an array of effective and long-lasting voluntary strategies to engage and aid New Yorkers who are in acute states of mental distress or substance use and who may also be unhoused.

The rally organizers are the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest.
