Melissa Iachán, Senior Supervising Counsel at NYLPI, delivered a range of updates on City, State and national legal environmental issues before a virtual crowd of more than 130 participants at a New York City Bar Association panel, joining Thomas Berkman, General Counsel of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; Michael B. Gerrard, Professor and Director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Columbia Law School; Daphany Rose Sanchez, Executive Director of Kinetic Communities Consulting; and Philip Weinberg, Professor at Columbia University. Melissa is a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Environmental Law Committee and presented at the Association’s 2020 Environmental Law in Review panel, moderated by co-chair of the Environmental Law Committee, Margaret Barry.
Melissa spoke on the full implementation of the Waste Equity Law (Local Law 152) in 2020; victories in the Supreme Court and at the Appellate Division; Commercial Waste Zones; Local Law 199 and how COVID-19 has impacted the beginning of its implementation; and the impact of the City’s cuts to organic waste recycling and community composting.
