NYLPI client Shanice Givens has been featured in The Atlantic, in a powerful new story about the disproportionately severe discipline meted out by certain charter schools to children in predominantly black and Latino areas. Ms. Givens is currently represented by NYLPI’s Disability Justice program and our co-counsel in a lawsuit against Success Academy Charter Schools for that network’s discriminatory treatment of her then 6-year old child and other similarly situated children. The lawsuit represents a critical step in ensuring that the benefits of charter schools are not denied to children with disabilities by means of “hyper-disciplinary” policies that have the effect of excluding such children.
