NYLPI, along with Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC), Reinvent Albany, Riders Alliance, StreetsPAC, TransitCenter, Transportation Alternatives, and Tri-State Transportation Campaign, praised incoming Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg, stating that her “street smarts and savvy will add significantly to this position and help to move forward such important issues as a fair funding formula, shared streets, Vision Zero, improved accessibility, and congestion pricing.” Incoming Deputy Secretary-Designate Trottenberg formerly served as Commissioner of New York City’s Department of Transportation and served on the MTA Board. The advocates expressed collective anticipation for working with Incoming Deputy Secretary Trottenberg “to Build Back Better and implement President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg’s infrastructure program.”

Dear Deputy Secretary-Designate Trottenberg –

We were thrilled to hear of your appointment as Deputy Secretary of Transportation – congratulations! Your years of experience in Washington, combined with your work in the trenches in New York City, make you an ideal candidate to fill such a critical role. Your street smarts and savvy will add significantly to this position and help to move forward such important issues as a fair funding formula, shared streets, Vision Zero, improved accessibility, and congestion pricing.

Your commitment to these issues and their success was clearly evident during your tenure as Commissioner of New York City’s Department of Transportation, and while serving on the MTA Board. As a city and region, we continue to benefit from your efforts to improve safety for all roadway users, including the use of bus lane and speed enforcement cameras; to install protected bike lanes, bus lanes and busways – including the new Main Street busway – and to bring good government oversight and fiscal stewardship to the MTA. Thank you for your work on behalf of pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders!

As transit advocates, we especially appreciate that you share our philosophy that agency leaders and advocates are essentially on the same side – better transit – and hope we can work together constructively despite our respective differing roles.

We look forward to working with you to Build Back Better and implement President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg’s infrastructure program. Please feel free to call on us in your next great chapter.

We are rooting for your, and our nation’s, success.

Sincerely,
