NYLPI Supports Digital Fair Repair Act During Town Hall
May 12, 2021Environmental Justice, News, Waste Equity
NYLPI supports the proposed Digital Fair Repair Act to help equitably distribute the burdens and benefits of New York City’s waste management system. During a recent town hall hosted by Assembly Member Patricia Fahy, NYLPI Legal Fellow Caroline Soussloff spoke to a panel representing farmers, educators, and small business owners on the importance of passing the act. Electronic waste is especially toxic, as it releases harmful contaminants like lead, mercury, and arsenic, and the Digital Fair Repair Act will reduce the City’s total amount of “e-waste” by promoting repairing reusing electronic equipment. The Act will increase the number and geographic diversity of repair sites across the city, aiming to drive down the cost of repairs and increasing access to repair shops for people who do not now have an authorized repair shop in their community.
