Jose Lopez and Theo Oshiro, co-executive directors of Make the Road NY, published an op-ed entitled “New York’s People of Color Deserve More in 2023.” The advocates encourage Governor Kathy Hochul to acknowledge the legislative and organizing power of people of color. Make the Road NY is a steering committee member of Coverage4All (C4All) alongside NYLPI.

Last year, Hochul’s first budget and legislative session failed our communities, with narrow health care interventions that failed to confront the grave inequities in the system, the exclusion of undocumented immigrants from an expansion to child care, and no meaningful action to expand tenant protections or support excluded workers. While more than $1 billion went to fund the stadium of a billionaire’s sports team and a Long Island slush fund, our communities were largely turned away.
