Press Release: New Series of Pro Bono Guides Offers Legal Resource for Newly Launching and Established Nonprofits

New York Lawyers for the Public Interest’s Nonprofit Toolkit makes legal guidance accessible for all nonprofits

New York, NY – July 27, 2020 — New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a leading civil rights nonprofit, today released a series of free guides for nonprofits that offers essential legal information to nonprofit leaders and other organizational decision-makers. The series, called the NYLPI Nonprofit Toolkit, supports nonprofits in any stage of development, from those newly launching to long-standing organizations, and covers a wide-range of topics including intellectual property, labor and employment best practices, and considerations for launching a nonprofit, among others.

As nonprofits face immense pressure and hardship as a result of the twin public health crises of COVID-19 and systemic racism, NYLPI’s guides and services offer much-needed support. Through the series, NYLPI aims to provide low-income communities who might not otherwise have access to private legal advice with vital information for launching or running a successful nonprofit organization. NYLPI is working to support and strengthen small to midsize nonprofit organizations, especially those that serve Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) or are led by BIPOC.

“These guides provide a base coat of legal information for leaders of new or thriving nonprofits to allow them to advance their critical work to create social change,” said Marnie Berk, Director of Pro Bono Programs at NYLPI. “Legal services can be expensive and far out of reach for many organizations. Though this toolkit, we are working to level the playing field for nonprofits of all kinds to make an impact.”

NYLPI’s Pro Bono Clearinghouse further builds capacity at nonprofits by working closely with other nonprofit organizations and private law firms to host free biweekly workshops and webinars that cover and expand upon the topics covered in the nonprofit guides.

In 2012 NYLPI published its first free guide to provide legal information about starting a nonprofit. Since then, the Pro Bono Clearinghouse has surveyed leaders from local nonprofits about legal pain points and challenges, and in response, has crafted informational guides to answer their questions.

NYLPI’s development of the guides was made possible with support from partners including Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, Ropes & Gray LLP, DLA Piper and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, and Cooley LLP.
