PRESS RELEASE: COMMUNITY-BASED, ENVIRONMENTAL AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS ACROSS COUNTRY ISSUE STATEMENT AND UNIFIED DEMANDS
Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright joins NYLPI, bringing wide-ranging expertise as nationally known champion for environmental justice communities
New York, NY – January 25, 2021 – New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a leading civil rights advocacy organization for New Yorkers confronting inequality and the impacts of systemic racism, today announced Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright as its new Director of Environmental Justice. Rogers-Wright returns to New York from the Climate Justice Alliance, where he led the organization’s Green New Deal initiatives as a key national advisor and served as a primary contact for federal lawmakers addressing environmental justice issues.
An energetic and deeply respected environmental justice leader nationally and in New York, Rogers-Wright has worked closely with New York elected officials and with many of NYLPI’s longtime environmental justice community partners on successful local campaigns.
“New York has been leading the fight for climate and environmental justice, building out the solutions and wisdom of frontline organizations and the communities they serve,” said Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright. “Now is a critical moment for me to return to my hometown to advance and contribute to this salient work while manifesting NYLPI’s ethos of Justice Through Community Power. I am honored and excited to work with and learn from the dedicated, talented and punctilious team at NYLPI.”
As director of NYLPI’s Environmental Justice Program and the newest member of the organization’s leadership team, Rogers-Wright will lead an interdisciplinary staff of attorneys, community organizers, advocates, and volunteers. He will guide the Environmental Justice program’s growth, involvement in community partnerships, and advocacy to promote the wellbeing of New Yorkers in environmental justice communities. These communities are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis and take action to resist the polluting industries negatively affecting their health and safety, including the harm amplified by COVID-19. NYLPI believes these communities must have leadership in solutions to achieve environmental justice.
“I’m excited to welcome Anthony to the NYLPI team at this pivotal moment for environmental and racial justice, and I look forward to seeing our Environmental Justice Program continue to partner vigorously with those facing disproportionate harm,” said McGregor Smyth, Executive Director of NYLPI. “With the benefit of Anthony’s leadership, we will continue to advance the rights of these communities and help amplify their voice.”
