Let’s Talk About Space, 2023 and Beyond – Experts Highlight Nonprofit Sector’s Environment and Space Challenges
New York, NY – – On Tuesday, March 14, top industry experts gathered at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice to discuss climate and space challenges impacting the nonprofit sector. Hosted by Nonprofit New York and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), speakers from Nonprofit New York, NYLPI, Denham Wolf, NYC Accelerator, Hester Street, The Wright Group, OPEN Impact, and Paul Weiss offered their expertise at the half-day summit. Three candid and insightful panel discussions covered the following core topics.
- Climate Change – Examining all present and upcoming environmental legislation (ex: Local Law 97) and how nonprofits can advocate for proper implementation. The panel also highlighted new strategies to advance environmental justice.
- Real Estate – Analysis of the current and projected NYC office building occupancy rates, pricing transactions per square foot, and real estate that advances mission-driven work as nonprofits transition to hybrid and shared space work models.
- Capital Funding – Methods to obtain capital and state funding for the development of office spaces.
The event was sponsored by OPEN Impact Real Estate and Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP.
“It was a wonderful morning for the sector filled with fresh ideas on real estate, space and briefing on new laws — practical and aspirational. We were delighted to co-sponsor with the powerhouse team at Nonprofit New York,” mentioned Marnie Berk, Director of Pro Bono Programs at NYLPI.
Chai Jindasurat-Yasui, Vice President of Policy at Nonprofit New York stated “Space is such a huge part of ensuring that nonprofits are able to do their work. It is mission critical, but we don’t often make the time and the space to delve into the issues. These conversations often take the backburner, but now is the time to educate ourselves on upcoming climate requirements, trends in real estate, and how to fundraise for nonprofit spaces.”
