On September 28, NYLPI’s Director of Disability Justice Ruth Lowenkron presented as part of the 39th Annual New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS) Conference.

Ruth was part of the first Criminal Justice workshop, “Diversion: Mental Health First Responders.” The panel discussed the need for alternative mental health crisis response as outlined by Correct Crisis Intervention Today NYC (CCIT-NYC). The timing of this panel coincided with a week of testimonies delivered by Mackenzie Arnold and Mia Soto to the New York City council advocating for a crisis response plan that is devised and led by community members and mental health advocates.

The panel also featured Christina Sparrock and Carla Rabinowitz from CCIT-NYC as well as Tim Black from Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets (CAHOOTS).
