Statement on the Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act

NYLPI released a statement in response to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) after the bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden on August 16. The bill has been praised by some for addressing the climate crisis and healthcare costs, but NYLPI has expressed concern and dismay over many of the concessions made in order to have the IRA passed. These concessions — particularly cuts to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA) — will embolden the production and usage of fossil fuels in the United States.

“New York, the nation, and the people’s government should not be held hostage by surreptitious side deals or lawmakers more emboldened to fossil fuel corporations than the principles and practice of environmental justice.”
