Suhali Méndez Testifies During Oversight Hearing on Seniors Aging in Place

Disability Justice, Fair Housing, News

Suhali Méndez, Senior Advocate in NYLPI’s Disability Justice program, testified at a recent virtual hearing hosted by the New York City Council on Wednesday, April 7th. The oversight hearing on Seniors Aging in Place in NYCHA during a Pandemic was hosted by the Committees on Public Housing and the Committee on Aging.

The hearing focused on two local bills, sponsored by the chair of each respective committee, that will allow NYCHA’s senior citizen residents to have accessibility and resources within their communities. Méndez emphasized that NYCHA is largely inaccessible to individuals with disabilities and that NYCHA must increase the number of accessible apartments, make reasonable accommodations and modifications for existing NYCHA tenants, and vastly decrease the amount of time that tenants with disabilities must wait to obtain accessible housing.
