Senior Supervising Counsel
Melissa Iachán is Senior Supervising Counsel in the Environmental Justice Program at NYLPI, where she supervises the legal work of the Environmental Justice team, and advocates to improve access and equity for vulnerable low-income communities and communities of color, particularly regarding circumstances which disproportionately impact those communities’ environmental and health conditions. Melissa's leadership has led to successful legislative campaigns as well as strategic litigation victories. Before joining NYLPI, Melissa worked for the City of New York at the mayor’s office, and at the New York City Business Integrity Commission, developing expertise in regulatory law. Previously, Melissa worked as a litigation associate in private practice in the areas of white collar defense, complex civil litigation and bankruptcy litigation. Melissa has experience in community organizing, political advocacy, government relations, and political strategy, which she combines in her advocacy work at NYLPI. Melissa received her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and her B.A. from Brown University.
