Sophie Dalsimer

Co-Director of Health Justice

Sophie Dalsimer is Co-Director of Health Justice. Her work focuses on advancing the rights of noncitizens at the intersections of health and disability justice through a combination of direct legal services and systemic legal advocacy. She helps lead NYLPI’s efforts to dismantle barriers to healthcare for immigrant New Yorkers with serious medical conditions and noncitizens who identify as transgender, gender-nonconforming, intersex or those living with HIV. She brings nearly a decade of detained removal defense experience to NYLPI’s work exposing the lack of access to healthcare for noncitizens confined in immigration detention. Prior to joining NYLPI in 2023, Sophie was a supervising attorney at Brooklyn Defender Services where she worked since 2014 with the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), the nation’s first universal representation program for noncitizens facing detention and deportation. There she litigated removal defense cases at the immigration and appellate court levels, focused on individuals with criminal legal system contacts and those with mental health disabilities. Sophie earned her J.D. at Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts and her B.A. from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is a native New Yorker.
