Telemundo: Undocumented Immigrants Can Donate Organs, But They Cannot Receive Them
August 10, 2022Coverage4All, Health Justice, Immigrant Justice, Medical Access, News
NYLPI’s Senior Staff Attorney for Health Justice Yleana Román was featured in Telemundo 47’s investigative segment on access to organ transplants for undocumented immigrants. The segment explains how undocumented immigrants in New York are able to be organ donors but are unable to receive a transplant — even in the case of a life-threatening emergency. Though undocumented immigrants may be able to access temporary medical assistance through Emergency Medicaid, Román points out that it does not cover organ transplants. NYLPI calls upon Governor Kathy Hochul and New York legislators to enact Coverage4All which would expand healthcare access to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status.
