NYLPI’s Director of Disability Justice Ruth Lowenkron penned a letter to the editor featured in the upcoming issue of The Nation. Lowenkron’s letter is in response to the December 2021 article, “Where Defund Isn’t Dead.” Lowenkron expressed dismay towards the editorial focus on New York’s B-HEARD program.

“It must also be noted that the B-’HEARD’ program has not heard the call of the advocates, many of whom have lived experience with mental health crises, despite our active endorsement of truly nonpolice models with excellent and decades-long track records, such as the CAHOOTS program in Oregon.”

Lowenkron represents NYLPI as a steering committee member for Correct Crisis Intervention Today – NYC (CCIT-NYC). Learn more about this true nonpolice proposal for NYC at
